Tribal belly dance is a new style of belly dancing that first emerged on the West Coast of the US in the late 1980’s. It is a modern interpretation of the classic choreography of belly dance from the Middle East and combines the folkloric styles of India, North Africa and Spain. It is usually danced by a group of dancers who use improvisation to execute movements and combinations. Both the music and the costuming make this a uniquely different style to traditional belly dance. Tribal style tends to feel more grounded and earthy and the steps do not need to be complex, because of the movement, costumes and energy of the dancers themselves.
Phoenix (Sarah Duerr)
Sarah has been dancing all her life but came to Egyptian Belly Dancing in 2005. One year later she reluctantly attended a Tribal workshop and immediately found the earthy nature and expression of this dance to embrace all that she adores in movement, music and creative style.
She has studied with various Tribal belly dance teachers and continues to attend workshops and Tribal events to further her enjoyment of this dance.
